...Have You Been Crying To Taylor Swift?
TV & film reviews from May 2024
Welcome back to “Did Rachael Hate That?”, a monthly-ish newsletter where I share the best, worst and weirdest stuff I watched recently. If you want to catch my reviews in real time, I put them in my IG stories.
Without further ado, here are my Must Watch, Meh, and Skips from May…
Must Watch:
The Fall Guy (pay to rent, romcom/action) — This was so fun! It's smart and self-aware and played with action movie tropes in a hilarious way. I laughed a lot, there's a GREAT dog, the stunts were a blast (I mean, they'd better be) and the ending was fantastic.
In Limbo (Hulu, dramedy) — Loved this sweet and charming Australian dark comedy about friendship and suicide. (I know, but trust me!)
Heeramandi (Netflix, foreign drama) — Absolutely devoured this sensational drama about an Indian brothel during British colonial times. Apparently it was wildly expensive to make and every dollar is on screen, it's GORGEOUS.
Meh:
The Idea of You (Amazon, romantic drama) — Don't come in expecting an exact adaptation if you loved the book, but as a standalone movie I thought this was very cute! It’s no When Harry Met Sally, but it’s much better than the Netflix rom coms we’ve been getting, imho.
Devs (Hulu, sci-fi thriller) — It's interesting, but ultimately wasn't successful for me. Too many plot holes and the protagonist’s performance was lacking, especially next to the likes of Nick Offerman. If you like sci-fi thrillers, though, give it a try.
Skip:
Unfrosted (Netflix, comedy) — Literally every funny person who ever existed is in this... and it's so, SO bad. At least it's exposing Seinfeld for the turd that he is, I guess?
Knuckles (Paramount, animation/action) — Couldn't make it through one ep. I guess I’m not really the target audience, though 🤷♀️
Honorable mention:
The Mapleworth Murders (Roku) is a very fun comedy from the folks who made 30 Rock, Kimmy Schmidt, Girls 5Eva, etc. — it’s an absolute must watch if you like that style, e.g. 73 jokes per minute. (It was originally released on Quibi, which is why you’ve never heard of it.)
That’s all for this month, thanks for reading and I’ll see you on the couch!

I didn't realize that "the idea of you" 1) finally dropped 2) was intended (?) to be a streaming release when it did. i've really admired AH's "do whatever the fuck kinda movies i want" approach. this was the movie that was pegged for olivia and harry styles or something right?
Saw Fall Guy in the theater. Such a fun movie. Added Heeramandi to my list, it has been on my radar just not officially made the list yet.
In Limbo. Just binged that based on your recommendation. I loved it so much.
